The Brotherhood of the Unicorn

This novel set in Grenada has been described as a delightful coming of age story.  It is an account of Jerry a young boy who in growing up in the custody of his older sisters after his father dies and his mother goes abraod to earn money for the family.

Many Caribbean readers will identify with this novel as it is an all too common Caribbean scenario - children being left in the care of grandparents and older siblings while their parents go off to work in other countries.  These children (called barrel children) in the Caribbean grow up with foreign goods and lots of material possessions that their freinds envy but no real love or family structure.  Their friends become their family and they are a societal problem.

Fortunately this is not the story of Jerry whose sisters love him to death despite all of his misdeeds and try to bring him up correctly.  Jerry does grow up correctly but before that happens this story details his memorable adventures.  These adventures are very Caribbean, most are very histerical and you will never forget them.

This is a must read for any lover of Caribbean literature.
